How To Cleanse Oily Skin Without Drying It Out

If you have oily skin, then you likely rely on a skin care regimen that helps to reduce as much of this oil as possible, especially when it comes to the buildup on your face. While this is a good solution to make your skin appear beautiful and less shiny, you can easily strip your skin of the oils it needs to remain healthy. Avoid Products With Surfactants

If you typically invest in facial cleansers made for oily skin, then many of these products will contain ingredients called surfactants. This is especially true if the cleanser you purchase is one that foams as it is applied to the skin. Surfactants are foaming agents, detergents, emulsifiers, and dispersants. This means that the chemicals clean and break up the oils on the face as they foam. While this is a good thing to remove the oil from your skin, the chemicals are typically quite strong and will pull water out of the skin as well. This will leave you with dry and flaky skin after you cleanse.

You should stay away from all foaming cleansers and any product that contains a surfactant like ammonium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate. Also, most bar soaps should be avoided too. These products typically have a variety of binders in them that help to keep the soap in a solid form. These binders typically have a high pH value and can cause the skin to become unbalanced and acidic. This can dry out the skin as well.

Look for a skin cleanser, like a gel variety, that is surfactant free and pH neutral. If possible, look for a variety that is hypoallergenic. Sometimes, allergic reactions can occur with the ingredients in your skincare products. The reaction is called contact dermatitis and it can leave you with scaly and dry skin on your face. Avoiding potential allergens is best to keep the skin from drying out.

Use Warm Water

Many people use hot water to wash their faces. Hot water will remove more of the oils from your face than warm or cool water. Hot water has less surface tension, and this allows it to get into your pores and the crevices of the face to remove dirt and debris. Unfortunately, hot water also forces away the outermost layer of skin and the protective layer of oil that keeps your skin from flaking off your body too early. This will leave you with dry skin. 

To keep your skin moist while cleaning it, make sure to use warm water instead of hot water. Cleanse your face with your gel cleaner and then rinse the soap and the debris away with a splash of cold water. This will help to close the pores so your skin does not become oily. Afterwards, use an oil-based moisturizer on your face. This will help to replenish the moisture that may have been lost during the cleaning process without making your face feel greasy.

If your face seems overly dry in some areas, like during the winter, then you can use an oil-based moisturizer. Creams with light oils are best. Try to skip the creams that contain heavy oils like petrolatum. You should instead look for products that contain light and healthy oils like jojoba, coconut, olive, lavender, or argan oil. Only apply the lotion once a day in the morning to keep your skin from feeling overly greasy.
