Sprouted Grains: How They Can Help With Your Weight Loss And How To Start Sprouting Your Own

Edward Payne

Recent research has found when you sprout grains, you increase their health benefits. By sprouting a grain, you are changing it from an acidic food to an alkaline food and increasing its pH level. Some say sprouting grains turns it into a living plant, which your body recognizes as a vegetable. Eating a diet low in acid-producing foods and high in alkaline foods can give you many health benefits. Here are some ways including sprouted grains in your diet can help your exercise and weight loss efforts and simple instructions to help you sprout your own grains so you can add them into your diet.

Get Increased Energy for Exercise

When you don't have enough energy, it can be hard to exercise to lose weight and have a healthy lifestyle. An exercise plan that includes cardiovascular exercise and strength training can boost your metabolism to burn more calories throughout the day, but you first need the energy to exercise.

Eating the right foods can help you feel better and have more energy. When your body is too acidic from the wrong foods, it will try to to equalize itself by pulling these minerals from your body to adjust its pH. As your body goes through this process, it can weaken your immune system, making you vulnerable to viruses and disease and making you tired. By eating a diet of 60 to 80 percent alkaline foods and 20 to 40 percent acidic foods, your body will have the right pH and amount of minerals so it won't need to pull them from your bones, teeth, and organs. Alkaline foods include most vegetables, sprouted grains, and a variety of fruits, such as grapefruit, bananas, strawberries, apricots, mangoes, and melons.

When you increase your intake of sprouted grains and other alkaline foods, you will feel better and have more energy. Then, lower your intake of acidic foods, such as foods made from non-sprouted grains, meats, dairy products, and sweetened foods, to help your body have the right pH level. There is even some early evidence showing a diet low in acid-producing foods can help prevent kidney stones, promote strength in bones and muscles, improve your heart health and brain function, and lower your risk for type 2 diabetes. It has been shown that including sprouted barley in your diet can lower your blood pressure.

How to Sprout Your Grains

Sprouting your grains is a simple process that can give you extra health benefits. It increases the grain's essential amino acids, such as lysine, and increases its nutrients, such as B vitamins, vitamin C, folate, fiber, and protein. It also decreases the starch in the grain and makes it easier for your body to metabolize it.

To sprout, you only need the following:

  • Canning jar
  • Rubber band
  • Cheese cloth
  • Water
  • Grain of your choice, such as barley, wheat, buckwheat, millet, or rye

Begin by adding two cups of grain to a canning jar and enough water to fill the jar. Cover the jar with cheesecloth and secure with a rubber band around the mouth of the jar. Let it sit overnight for the grain to absorb some of the water.

The next morning, drain the water out of the jar through the cheese cloth. Set the jar upside down at a 45 degree angle in a bowl and place it out of direct sunlight. Make sure the grain does not cover the entire opening of cheesecloth so air can circulate into the jar and excess moisture can drip from the opening. This is to help prevent mold growth in the grain

In the evening, add water to the jar and rinse the grain. Tip the jar back upside-down to allow moisture to exit the jar while air circulates inside the jar around the grain.

Repeat this process for one to two more days until you see white sprouts emerge from each grain berry. Now your grain berries are changed from an acidic to alkaline food. You can add these sprouted berries to soups, breads, salads, or other dishes. You can also dehydrate them in a food dehydrator oven until they are hard and crunchy. Then, grind them up to make a sprouted grain flour to use in baking.
